Political career

In 1995 MacKay was elected to the Edinburgh City Council for the Labor Party. Within the party, he rose quickly and ran in the first Scottish general election in 1999 for the direct mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh South . With a clear lead over the SNP candidate Margo MacDonald and the Liberal Democrat Mike Pringle , he won the mandate and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the first cabinet under First Minister Donald Dewar , Mackay was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Justice. In the cabinet reshuffle after Dewar's death in 2000, MacKay was involved in the election of Henry McLeish as his successor. This appointed him as Jack McConnell's successor as Secretary of State for Finance. Iain Gray took over MacKay's position as Assistant Secretary of State for Justice. 2001 McLeish resigned and Jack McConnell was elected as his successor. In the following cabinet reshuffle, MacKay lost his post to Andy Kerr . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 , MacKay just lost his direct mandate to the Liberal Democrat Mike Pringle and left parliament. MacKay did not run for later elections.
