life and work

Viana was the son of a famous theater man at the time (Epifânio Aniceto Gonçalves Viana, 1813–1857). Because of the simultaneous death of his father and older brother, at 17 the burden of family maintenance was on his shoulders; he had to forego the official studies he was aiming for and was a customs officer and private scholar all his life. He worked as an autodidact in all the languages available to him (several dozen) and attended lectures by the classical philologist António José Viale (1806-1889) and the orientalist Guilherme de Vasconcelos Abreu (1842-1917). His special passion was the phonetics, orthography and lexicography of Portuguese, in the area of which he was in contact with numerous specialist representatives. He wrote school grammars in English and French and translated Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther into Portuguese.

At the beginning of its international fame was the essay "Essai de phonétique et de phonologie de la langue portugaise d'après le dialecte actuel de Lisbonne" in the famous journal Romania (12, 1883, pp. 29-98; Lisbon 1941; improved in: Estudos de fonética portuguesa , 1973, pp. 83-152).

Viana was a corresponding member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (1910).
