animal public eV is a non-profit animal and species protection association based in Düsseldorf .

The association was founded in 2001 and campaigns for the rights and protection of wild animals. The association is registered as an interest group in the lobby list of the German Bundestag (No. 46). The chair is Laura Zodrow.

Self-image, goals, tasks

The association sums up its self-image as follows:
"Respect for animals" is not only our motto, but also our goal. We want to ensure that wild animals no longer have to suffer from the will of human beings and can live in freedom and dignity.

The main focus is on a ban on hobby hunting , the end of keeping wild animals in the circus and the wildlife trade. In addition, the association is committed to phasing out zoo animal husbandry .

activities

One focus is continuous lobbying. The association works at state, federal and EU level to improve animal welfare law. To this end, delegates take part in hearings and send representatives to expert committees of the Federal Government . The association is also one of the founding members of the European animal welfare networks "ENDCAP" and "Dolphinaria Free Europe", which lobby for animal welfare on a European level.

In addition to political work, the association does media work. The association has participated in television programs such as “ Wallraff covers ”, “ Status Zoo ” and “ Planet Wissen ”.

Projects

Together with the Great Ape Project , the association works to ensure that great apes are granted "basic rights". However, a corresponding Bundestag petition was rejected by the Petitions Committee in 2015 .

The association takes criminal charges against the killing of unwanted zoo animals. In 2011 the Magdeburg zoo director and three of his employees were sentenced to fines - suspended on probation - following a complaint by the association for violating animal welfare law. They killed three off-breeding tiger cubs right after they were born.

The association works to ensure that the legal ban on preventing birds from flying is implemented in German zoos. According to the association, this has not yet been the case.

successes

According to the company, the following successes were achieved:

  • Comprehensive amendment to hunting law in North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Stricter management requirements for zoo animals
  • Federal Council resolutions against wildlife exchanges and the keeping of wild animals in the circus
  • Improving the protection of wild animals in the European Union
