Anjar is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat . With almost 1,400 years of history, Anjar is the oldest city in the Kachchh district .

Anjar has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 12 wards (constituencies).

Anjar was founded around 650 AD.

The city was devastated in the 2001 Gujarat earthquake .

Demographics

The city's population is 87,183 according to the 2011 census. Anjar has a gender ratio of 930 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 80.5% in 2011. Almost 77% of the population are Hindus , approx. 21% are Muslims and approx. 2% belong to another or no religion. 13.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Anjar is known for its traditional clothing, handicrafts, and metal crafts. Swords and knives made in Anjar and the surrounding villages are also exported outside of India.
