Haff Réimech
The nature reserve Haff Réimech ( lux . : nature reserve Haff Réimech , short: Haff Réimech ) in the canton Remich (lux .: Réimech ) in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg comprises protected wetlands in the area of former gravel and sand mining areas.
Position and extent
Haff Réimech is a nature reserve in the triangle Luxembourg - Germany - France in the municipality of Schengen and borders the villages of Remerschen , Wintringen and Schwebsingen . The large part of the protected Moselle valley lies between the Moselle in the east and vineyards in the west. It is a wetland of around 100 hectares that has been under protection since 1998.
history
The landscape along the Moselle has also been used by humans for thousands of years . Finds from the Celts and Romans were made again and again, e. B. during dredging work in gravel and sand mining .
From the 1940s onwards, sand and gravel were mined on a relatively large scale in this area and deep wounds were made in the formerly fertile plain. After the end of the gravel digging, the natural vegetation and fauna returned. The pits that were left open filled with groundwater over time and a lake (or pond) meadow landscape was created. The return of natural flora and fauna here has been so successful that an essential area has been classified as a nature reserve.
This situation also led to the decision to build a biodiverse in Remerschen as an instrument to sensitize people to nature and environmental protection.
Legal framework
After a long discussion the nature reserve was with the Grand Ducal Regulation of 23 March 1998 Lagoon Réimech created that the two areas excavators Weieren and Taupeschwues comprises (a total of 100.77 hectares, 75.10 ha core zone and buffer zone 25.67 ha).
This wetland is protected under the Ramsar Convention . It is also designated as a relevant bird sanctuary under the EU Birds Directive and thus belongs to the Natura 2000 areas.
Scope of protection
Haff Réimech is one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable wetlands in Luxembourg. It has also become a retreat for endangered animals and plants. 253 bird species and over 40 dragonfly species have already been identified.
ecology
Animals
The gray swallows have been guests in the Haff Réimech for several years . The most species-rich wetland in Luxembourg is home to around 76 percent of the bird species in the Grand Duchy (around 230 species of birds). So z. B .: the flow Plover ( Charadrius dubius ) which Uferschwalbe ( Riparia riparia ), Haubentaucher ( podiceps cristatus ), Bittern ( Ixobrychus minutus ), or the tufted ( Aythya fuligula ), the cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo ) and the bittern ( Botaurus stellaris ) the kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis ), the reed warbler ( Acrocephalus arundinaceus ), bearded tit ( Panurus biarmicus ) and the parsley tit ( Remiz pendulinus ).
There are also a large number of frogs , toads and other amphibians that find ideal living conditions here. In summer, come grass snakes ( Natrix natrix ) butterflies and dragonflies before. The sand lizard ( Lacerta agilis ) also uses the open pebble and sand areas here for sunbathing and for hunting insects.
plants
The vegetation in the nature reserve ranges from lichens , rare orchids to the ubiquitous reed (Phragmites communis), which offers many natural possibilities e.g. B. for bird protection and for breeding. The heavy bush cover also protects various species, but in turn narrows the habitat of others.
Nature trails
The nature reserve can be explored on two nature trails (1.5 or 3 hours walking time). Information boards are set up on both paths and lookout points have been defined to B. To be able to discover and observe birds in their natural environment.
