Ankalina Dahlem (* 1968 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German painter and writer .

life and work

Dahlem studied free painting at the Pasadena Art Center in 1990 and 1991, before taking the same subject with Jörg Immendorff at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in autumn 1991 . In 1993 she moved to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where she studied sculpture with Stephan Balkenhol and free painting with Erwin Gross and received her diploma in 1997. In 1998 she became a master class student.

The central motif in Dahlem's work are animals and nudes of women, which appear to be lovely but, on closer inspection, shock and shake up in their surreal ambience. The art historian Carola Muysers wrote on Faust-Kultur.de , Dahlem's women “at first glance remind you of the nymphs of Picasso and Matisse, of Cicciolina, the muse of Jeff Koons, or of playmates. At second glance we see that they are doing anything but serving male artists, fools and old men. ”Together with Jean-Christophe Ammann , Dahlem caused a sensation in 2002 with the exhibition A Correspondence . For a year, the artist sent the art historian and exhibition organizer a small drawing every day. Ammann responded by photocopying the drawings enlarged and then using watercolors or collages in an imaginative way. The result are ironically provocative, sometimes screamingly funny works of art that drift into obscene.

In 2012 the octopus , Dahlem's first volume of short stories, appeared.

Dahlem has two children, she lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.
