The Ankobra is a river in Ghana, West Africa .

It rises northeast of Wiawso , capital of the Sefwi-Wiawso District in the Western North Region , and flows more than 190 kilometers further south at Axim into the Gulf of Guinea . It reaches its greatest extent in southern Ghana . Up to Tomento ebb and flow are active. The river is navigable for about 80 kilometers from the mouth, and there are rapids in the upper area.
Fure , Mansi and Bonsa flow into the ankobra .
Naming
The name is said to have been given to it by the Portuguese because of its winding course, who came to the area around its mouth at the end of the 15th century and is derived from cobra, the Portuguese word for "snake".
