Ann Cavoukian (born October 7, 1952 in Cairo ) is a Canadian data protection officer. She is the former (1997-2014) Informationsfreiheits- and Information Commissioner ( Information and Privacy Commissioner - IPC) of the Canadian province of Ontario .

Cavoukian was in Egypt as a child of Armenian born parents emigrated in 1958 with her family to Toronto from (Canada). She is the sister of the Canadian musician Raffi Cavoukian .

Cavoukian earned his Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in psychology from the University of Toronto , specializing in criminology and law .

From 1987, she served as the first female director of compliance in the newly created office of Ontario Information and Data Protection Officer. In 1997 she was named Ontario Freedom of Information and Data Protection Commissioner. She is the first Freedom of Information and Data Protection Commissioner in Ontario to be re-elected for the second and third terms (until 2014). When it comes to data protection issues, she is regularly asked for her opinion by the media, not least because she can present complex issues in simple words. Cavoukian was named Data Protection Manager of the Year 2003 by a leading data protection magazine, an award nominated for privacy advocates around the world.

In an interview on March 29, 2005 she spoke out against the Adoption Disclosure Act 183 submitted by Minister Sandra Pupatello .
