Anna Mullikin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anna Margaret Mullikin (born March 7, 1893 in Baltimore Maryland , † August 24, 1975 in Philadelphia ) was an American mathematician .

Life and research

Mullikin was born in Baltimore, the youngest of four children, and studied at Goucher College . After completing her bachelor's degree in 1915, she taught at the Science Hill School in Shelbyville , Kentucky until 1917 , and was an instructor at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia until 1918 . She then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania on a college scholarship in mathematics and received her Masters degree in 1919 . She continued her studies with the topologist Robert Lee Moore (mathematician) and at the same time taught at the Stevens School in Germantown (Philadelphia) . In 1920 she moved to the University of Texas along with Moore, who had convinced the Texas math department to appoint her as an instructor. In 1922 she received her doctorate with the dissertation: Certain Theorems Relating to Plane Connected Point Sets. After her doctorate, she taught at William Penn High School in Philadelphia and from 1923 until her retirement in 1957 at Germantown High School (Philadelphia) . She co-authored several math textbooks with Ethel L. Grove.

Janiszewski – Mullikin theorem

Mullikin's research achieved results similar to those of the Polish topologist Zygmunt Janiszewski , although her work was completely independent of his. American mathematicians called the result in 1928 the "Janiszewski-Mullikin theorem", which appears in many quotes on their work in the 1980s with the names of both mathematicians. A detailed analysis of the mathematical content of their dissertation and its influence on future research in topology is described by Thomas Bartlow and David Zitarelli in their publications.
