Anna Sage (1934)

Anna Sage , née Ana Cumpănaş , (* 1889 in Comloşu Mare , Austria-Hungary ; † April 25, 1947 in Timişoara , Romania ) was a Romanian prostitute and brothel manager . Sage became known as the woman who betrayed "Public Enemy No. 1" John Dillinger to the FBI in 1934 . She went into pop culture as "The Woman in Red".

She grew up in the Banat and married for the first time in 1909. In 1911 she gave birth to a legitimate son, and the family emigrated to the United States in 1914. The couple divorced, and Cumpănaş worked first as a prostitute and then as a brothel manager in East Chicago , Indiana and Gary , Indiana. She married again and from then on bore the name Anna Sage.

On July 22, 1934 she lured John Dillinger into a trap for the FBI in order to receive a reward of 10,000 US dollars (approx. 190,000 dollars based on today's purchasing power ) and a right of residence in the USA. Dillinger was shot while attempting to arrest. Sage received only $ 5,000 and was expelled from the United States in 1936. She initially lived well off in Timisoara , but a large part of her fortune was gambled away by a lover in horse racing. She died in impoverishment.
