Anna Smaill

Anna Smaill (born April 1979 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand author, university lecturer, poet and former violinist. With The Sound of Memory , she won the World Fantasy Award 2016 in the "Best Novel" category.

Life

Smaill started playing the violin at the age of seven. She studied music for a year at New Zealand's University of Canterbury , but then lost confidence in her musical abilities and turned to writing. For another year of study she switched to English and music theory and graduated in 1998 with a bachelor's degree . For her Masters in English Literature she returned to Auckland, to the university there . In addition, she obtained a Masters in Creative Writing from Victoria University of Wellington in 2001 . In the meantime she lived in Tokyo for two years . In 2009 she completed a Ph.D. in contemporary American poetry, which she began at University College London . She then taught creative writing at the University of Hertfordshire until 2012. In 2017 and 2018 she lectured at the Victoria University of Wellington.

Smaill is married to the writer Carl Shuker . They met in 2001 in the creative writing class at Victoria University of Wellington and have a daughter and a son.
