Annandale is a whiskey distillery near Annan , Dumfries and Galloway , Scotland .

history

The distillery was founded in 1830 by George Donald near the city of Annan. In contrast to the usual lowland whiskeys, the distillery's barley was peated from the start. The reason for this was a nearby moor which, for reasons of practicality, was used to procure fuel for drying. In 1883 Annandale passed to John Gardner , who in turn sold it to Johnnie Walker after ten years . In the years that followed, the company resolved the investment backlog in modern equipment, but closed the distillery in 1924 in the course of concentrating on other production facilities and sold the site to a Robinson family who ran agriculture there. Much of the business fell into disrepair in the course of the 20th century. In 2007 the buildings were bought by David Thomson and Teresa Church . The opening was planned for 2011. However, after the buildings had been cleared of vegetation, it became apparent that the building fabric as a whole was no longer bearing. Massive supports were necessary to prevent the building from collapsing. The maintenance work delayed the start of construction, so that work on the renovation and reopening could not begin until 2011. Jim Swan was involved in the planning , so he designed the twin spirit still concept with a wash still and two spirit stills. The first barrel of the restored distillery was put into storage on November 15, 2014, and the first whiskey in 94 years was bottled in June 2018.

The distillery was visited by Alfred Barnard in the mid-1880s , which gives a detailed account of the distillery at that time. The annual output of the distillery is said to have been 28,000 gallons at this point in time  (this corresponds to around 130,000 liters using today's conversion rate of around 4.54 l per gallon).

In Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible 2020 the whiskey is praised with the award Best Single Cask, Single Malt Scotch Whiskey - 10 Years and Under ( Best Single Cask, Best Single Malt Scotch Whiskey - 10 Years and Under ).

production

Annandale initially planned to produce smoky whiskey. However, the production rooms are also designed to produce a non-smoky whiskey in parallel to the smoky one in the future. According to the distillery's website, separate “low wines receiver” and “spirit receiver” are provided for this so that the different forms are not mixed up.

The distillery has a mash tun ( mash tun ) with a capacity of 2.5 tonnes (forsyths), 4 wooden fermentation vats ( wash backs ) with a capacity of 12,000 liters each, a wash still with 12,000 l and 2 spirit stills with 4,000 l each. The production volume of the distillery is estimated by the operators at 250,000 liters of pure alcohol per year (with one-shift operation).

Master distiller is Malcolm Rennie, who previously worked for the Kilchoman distillery .

Visitors

The distillery offers guided tours followed by a tasting. The historic malt floors were converted into a café.
