Anne Ruth Herkes (* 1956 in Völklingen ) is a former State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and a German diplomat .

Life

Herkes studied Romance studies and political science at the Free University of Berlin , at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and at the London School of Economics . After taking the first state examination at the Free University of Berlin, she completed a graduate year at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna . In 1985, Herkes joined the Foreign Service and completed an intensive course in Arabic at the London School of Oriental and African Studies .

After completing his diplomatic training, Herkes became the personal assistant to the Minister of State at the Foreign Office . Further assignments took her to the German Embassy in Washington (1988–92), the Embassy in Tokyo (1992–96) and to Vienna to the Permanent Mission of Germany to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (1996–1999). From 1999 to 2002, Herkes was deputy head of the protocol department at the Federal Foreign Office. She then headed the economic department at the German Embassy in London .

In 2006, Herkes moved to the oil company BP at its headquarters in London. As Vice President Policy and Communications , she was responsible for the development and global management of the communications strategy and political lobbying in Europe, North and South America. During her business activity, she took part in the International Senior Management Program at the Business School St. Gallen .

From July 2010 to February 2012, Herkes was ambassador to Qatar . From March 5, 2012, she was permanent state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. She lost this office after the formation of the Merkel / Gabriel government in December 2013.

She has been a member of the Board of Directors of KBL Bank for the Qatari ruling Al Thani family since 2014 and has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Merck Finck Privatbankiers since 2016 .

Herkes is married and has two children.

Honors

Herkes is an honorary member of the German Industry Association in Great Britain . In 2000 she was appointed Officier de la Légion d'Honneur of the Republic of France.
