Anne Moody (born September 15, 1940 as Essie Mae Moody in Centerville , Mississippi , † February 5, 2015 in Gloster ) was an American writer and civil rights activist.

Life

Moody was best known for her autobiography Coming of Age in Mississippi , published in 1968 , in which she processed her experiences as black adolescents in rural Mississippi . Moody grew up as the eldest of eight siblings in poor circumstances. In school she stood out because of her special achievements and this later gave her the opportunity to study.

Shaped by the experiences in her youth, Moody advocated equal rights for the black population in the southern states of the USA.

“Like [Muhammad] Ali , she heard the news [sc. about the murder of Emmett Till by racists], for them the world of sexuality, racism and resistance opened up through the murder of their peers. It was a world of fear, a world where whites ruled and black young men despised black young women and were too cowardly to revolt. She began to despise the cowardice of black men and to get involved in the civil rights movement. "

- Justin, Harald: "Terrorized all my days", in: Konkret , No. 9, September 2015, p. 48.

In a quote published in 2004, she stated that she sees herself primarily as an activist and less as an author. Towards the end of her life, Anne Moody suffered from dementia .

Anne Moody was included in the Daughters of Africa anthology , edited in 1992 by Margaret Busby in London and New York.
