Anne Wilson Schaef
Anne Wilson Schaef (* 1934 ; † January 19, 2020 in Arkansas ) was an American suffragette and psychotherapist .
In her first book, Female Reality. Women in the men's world. it depicts western society as being shaped by a male system (originally referred to as the white male system ), which is opposed to a reactive female system . She proposes that this system is based on myths. As an alternative, she called for a strengthening of the Active Female System .
Today, Schaef focuses on the subject of addiction. The term addiction is taken very broadly as an "addiction process" (see: codependency. The addiction behind addiction, 19th edition Munich 2014, p. 32 ff) and compulsive behaviors and also work addiction , and forms of codependency ( ibid. p. 53 ff) such as addiction to closeness, relationship dependence and sex addiction are discussed in her books. In In the Age of Addiction , she equates the male system and the reactive female system with the addiction system she portrays. While she still strived for an equal position of the male system and the active female system in female reality , she now describes the male system and the reactive female system as hostile to life. The systems are actually not strictly gender-linked, many women are advocates of the male system and some men also live according to the female system. In this book, she moves away from the terms female and male system in favor of the gender-neutral term addiction system. In In the Age of Addiction , Western society as a whole is also presented as an addiction system, or in “co-dependency. The addiction behind addiction ”illustrates the connections between Western culture and its immanent addiction processes (cf.: Co-Dependency, Munich 2014, p. 80 ff). Schaef is a co-founder of the Woman's Institute of Alternative Psychotherapy .
Schaef died on January 19, 2020 at her Arkansas home at the age of 85.
