Anneken Hendriks
Anneken Hendriks (* 1522 ; † November 10, 1571 in Amsterdam , the Netherlands ; also known as Anna Heyndriks daughter and as Anneke de Vlaster ) was a Frisian martyr of the Anabaptist movement .
She was captured as part of the persecution of the Anabaptists and subjected to an embarrassing questioning on October 27, 1571 , but refused to reveal the names of other Mennonites . The resistance of a woman from a humble background, aged 48 or 49, annoyed the councilors so much that they chose a form of punishment that was unusual even for the circumstances at the time. Anneken Hendriks was tied to a ladder and her mouth was filled with gunpowder . Then she was carried through the city to the place of execution, where she was thrown into the burning pyre.
Her death was illustrated in a copper engraving by Jan Luyken and published in Märtyrerspiegel .
