Annie Pootoogook

Annie Pootoogook (born May 11, 1969 in Cape Dorset , † September 19, 2016 in Ottawa ) was a contemporary Inuit artist from Canada who combined traditional aspects of Canadian Inuit art with contemporary topics such as media and violence in her drawings .

Annie Pootoogook comes from a family of artists: her mother Napatchie Pootoogook (1938–2002) and her grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona (? –1983) were well-known representatives of Inuit art and exerted an influence on Annie Pootoogook's artistic development. Pootoogook didn't start drawing until 1997. In 2006 she was awarded the Sobey Art Award, the most important Canadian award for young artists. Annie Pootoogook's work was exhibited at both the Montreal Biennale and documenta in 2007 .
