The prisoner-of-war team main camp Stalag VI C Bathorn, Bathorn is a district of the municipality of Hoogstede in the county of Bentheim , emerged from the former Emsland camp XIV.

history

In 1938, Emslandlager XIV was laid out 2.5 kilometers east of the Bathorn district. It functioned as a prison camp for prison inmates and was designed for 1,000 people. After the Reich Labor Service had withdrawn , prisoners were supposed to cultivate the Emsland moorland. The camp was completed on June 21, 1938 and was only occupied for a short time. After the outbreak of World War II , the Wehrkreiskommando VI Westfalen ( Münster ) took over the facility as a team main camp (Stalag VI C) for prisoners of war . The branch camps (Stalag VI C / Z) Groß Hesepe (Emslandlager XI), Dalum (Emslandlager XII), Wietmarschen (Emslandlager XIII) and Alexisdorf (Emslandlager XV) were subordinate to him. In May 1942 the Stalag VI B Neu-Versen / Emsland including its branch camps Oberlangen , Wesuwe and Fullen was subordinated to the main camp Bathorn. There were prisoners of war from France , Belgium , Italy , Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union . The death rate in the Bathorn camp was relatively low compared to other prisoner of war camps. On April 5, 1945, the camp was liberated by the Canadian military.
