Versen became known far beyond the Emsland through the discovery of the bog body “ Roter Franz ”. For a long time it was considered to be the best preserved bog corpse. The "Rote Franz" was found in June 1900. The latest investigations date the death of the "Emsland-Ötzi" to the period between 252 and 388 AD.

After a self-government valid until 1970, Versen was merged with the neighboring communities Groß Fullen , Klein Fullen and Rühle to form the municipality of Emslage on July 1, 1970 , and on March 1, 1974 it was reclassified to the nearby district town of Meppen ( district of Emsland ).
