Ano-genital control

Ano-genital control between two dogs

Ano-genital control is the technical term for the intimate mutual sniffing of dogs , rats , rabbits and other animals in the anal and genital region . It is particularly noticeable in individuals of different sexes.

According to Dorit Feddersen-Petersen , this process, which is also described as anal thunderstorms or genital thunderstorms , as well as naso-nasal contact , serves both to clarify the hierarchy and to determine the social and sexual status of the conspecifics ( vertebrate pheromones , Jacobson's organ ). The secretions released by the anal glands and sex glands are sniffed .

The genital thunderstorm should not be confused with the violent thunderstorm of the foxes and coyotes , first described in 1944 , in which the upper side of the tail root is smelled and occasionally the incisors are nibbled on. The function of this contact with the viold gland has not been clearly established. It is also controversial whether violent weathering only occurs in foxes and coyotes or also in wolves and domestic dogs.
