Dorit Urd Feddersen-Petersen

Dorit Urd Feddersen-Petersen (born April 12, 1948 in Rendsburg ) is a German behavioral scientist specializing in the behavior of animals from the dog family (canids).

Life

Dorit Urd Feddersen-Petersen studied veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover . In 1975 she began her doctorate in expressive behavior and social organization on miniature poodles, golden jackals and their captive bastards , supervised by Wolf Herre , at the Institute for Pet Studies at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . She received her doctorate in 1978 at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover and then headed the pet garden in Kiel and founded the working group "Behavioral biology on wild and domestic canids", which she then led. After the Institute for Pet Studies was closed, she continued her work in the Department of Functional Morphology and Biomechanics of the Zoological Institute of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel.

Dorit Urd Feddersen-Petersen is a veterinarian specializing in behavioral studies and has the additional title of animal welfare studies. She became known to the general public through popular science publications, television productions and the so-called fighting dog debate , in which she repeatedly appeared as a reviewer. She is known to the professional world through numerous publications and through her research activities. In 1992 she received the Felix Wankel Animal Welfare Research Award from the University of Munich for her scientific work . She retired in 2013.

The main research areas include:

  • Behavioral studies in relatives and ancestors of domestic dogs : ( wolves , coyotes , golden jackals , red foxes ) under comparable environmental conditions.
  • The "becoming a pet" of the dog, the domestication of the wolf. She examined differences in behavior between different breeds of dogs and wolves, communication between dogs and wolves under semi-natural, comparable environmental conditions, differences in cooperation and competition, and studies on the function of social play in wild canids and domestic dogs.
  • As part of the fighting dog debate, she explained the biological functions of threats and fighting in wolves and domestic dogs; she examined the influence of humans on the aggressive behavior of dogs.
