Anonidium usambarense is an extinct species of the family of annonaceous . It was endemic to the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania .
description
Anonidium usambarense was a tall tree of unknown size. The young shoots had short, rust-colored hairs. The older branches were blackish, smooth, with fine wrinkles and covered with cork pores. The leaves were obovate, oblong, approximately 25 cm long and 9 to 10 cm wide. The apex was rounded or bluntly pointed, the leaf base bluntly wedge-shaped. The texture of the leaves was parchment-like, shimmering through and smooth on both sides. The smooth or finely haired petioles were 5 to 7 mm long and fluted above. The habit of the hermaphroditic flowers is unknown. The male inflorescence axis was 1 to 1.2 cm long and covered with rust-colored felt hairs. In the middle it carried a stem-encompassing bract that was 3 to 4 mm long. The broad, rounded sepals pointed at the apex were 4 to 5 mm long and 7 to 8 mm wide. They were tomentose on the outside and smooth on the inside. The petals were gray-tomentose on the outside and smooth on the inside. The lanceolate outer petals were 2.5 to 3.5 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide, the egg-shaped inner petals were 1.8 to 2 cm long and 1.1 cm wide. There were numerous 3 mm long anthers with smooth appendages.
status
Anonidium usambarense was collected only once in December 1910 at an altitude of 900 m. Despite intensive field work in the region, the species was not found again. The reasons for the disappearance of Anonidium usambarense were commercial logging and the deterioration of the habitat through agricultural use.
