Anonymous architecture is a term for traditional architecture that was coined by Bernard Rudofsky . It describes a segment of construction that is created without the involvement of professional design planning. Today the term is sometimes used synonymously with traditional architecture .

Term coined by Rudofsky

1964 Rudofsky published the book Architecture Without Architects - A Short Introduction to Non-Pedigreed Architecture (about: architecture without architects - a brief introduction to architecture without pedigree ) that the eponymous exhibition at MoMA accompanied. It was published in German by Residenz Verlag in 1989 under the title Architecture without Architects - An Introduction to Anonymous Architecture . Rudofsky is one of the few people who have dealt with this topic further. It mainly describes the traditional variants of building without an architect.

In addition to written treatises, he has put together an exhibition that points to the content of the anonymous architecture. For Rudofsky, this sector of construction represents food for thought, which formulates goals for modern and environmentally friendly architecture.

Use of the term

The use of the term often deviates from the strictly interpreted literal meaning. The two terms anonymous architecture and architecture without architects are often used synonymously, but in the strict sense of the word there is a slight difference.

Anonymous is an architecture in this strict sense only if the design author (even if it is a planning layman's) not documented or is not known to the public / professional public. Without architects , architecture can be created with a well-known (possibly even prominent) draftsman behind it, but not an architect, but e.g. B. a civil engineer .

In contrast to this, both terms are used pragmatically to distinguish them from an academic architecture, among other things, to distinguish them from spectacular architecture that is highly regarded by the public and from the architecture of prominent star architects whose names have become brands and who form a large part of the educated public knows.
