Anopheles maculipennis is on the one hand a single species of the malaria mosquito ( Anopheles ), on the other hand it gives its name to the Anopheles maculipennis group within the malaria mosquito , which includes other species.

Anopheles maculipennis in the strict sense

To type in the strict sense today also Anopheles alexandraeschingarevi , basilii and typicus as synonyms found.

The species is distributed between Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans in almost all European countries.

Anopheles maculipennis prefers small accumulations of water for laying their eggs, but does not attach importance to vegetation. The larvae can be found in dredging holes or irrigation water containers, for example. They tolerate the strong temperature fluctuations in these "waters" better than the larvae of other species. Adult mosquitoes are also relatively insensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. They are about 6 mm long and often live in animal stalls, but also outdoors. They are less common in living spaces. The females are nocturnal and sting mammals and birds.

In Southeastern Europe, Anopheles maculipennis was jointly responsible for the transmission of malaria, in Central Europe it was not a significant malaria vector due to its relative rarity .

Anopheles maculipennis group

The maculipennis group includes the Anopheles atroparvus , Anopheles messeae and Anopheles maculipennis in the narrower sense, which also occur in Germany . The full-grown mosquitoes ( imago ) of these species are very difficult to distinguish, but a distinction is possible based on the clutch and larvae.
