Anopheles atroparvus is a species of the malaria mosquito ( Anopheles ), which for a long time was considered to be the only carrier of malaria north of the Alps. The species belongs to the Anopheles maculipennis group within the malaria mosquito . The species names Anopheles cambournaci (Roubaud and Treillard) and Anopheles fallax (Roubaud) are synonyms .

It occurs along the coasts of Europe and was found, for example, in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Hungary as well as on the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov . In Germany, it is the dominant Anopheles species along the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas . In inland it occurs only sporadically, mostly in regions with high mineral content.

It has not yet been clearly established whether Anopheles atroparvus has a higher tolerance for brackish water than other species. The larvae usually develop in ditches, cattle troughs and ponds that lie in the sun without shade. The species overwinters in cattle stalls, where these mosquitoes can also be found all year round.

Malaria known as marsh fever in parts of northern Germany was mainly transmitted by Anopheles atroparvus . This species was also the main vector of malaria in the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.
