Heinz-Werner Baer

Heinz-Werner Robert Baer (born December 7, 1927 in Senftenberg ; † May 3, 2009 in Rostock ) was a German educator and scientist .

Life

Heinz-Werner Baer was born on December 7, 1927 in Senftenberg, the son of the high school teacher Willi Baer and his wife Martha Baer, ​​née Schulz. His parents trained him up to the age of six, then he attended an elementary school in his hometown and finally, from Easter 1938, the high school there. In 1943 he worked as an air force helper . In July 1944 he had to leave the school with the final certificate and ended the air force helper service prematurely because he was appointed to the Reich Labor Service . Since autumn he has served in the Wehrmacht , with his unit fighting on the Eastern Front. He suffered arm and back injuries during the last days of the war.

After the end of the war, Baer was trained as an assistant teacher in his hometown for six weeks. In October 1945 he finally became a teacher at a primary school in Hormersdorf . He stayed in this position for two years, then passed his first teacher examination in Stollberg . In the summer of 1947 he was in Lichtenstein / Sa. trained and began studying biology , chemistry , education and psychology at the universities of Leipzig , Rostock and Jena . During his studies he was a teacher every semester break. In 1951 he completed his studies at the University of Jena with a state examination for teaching in biology and chemistry.

He then became an unscheduled aspirant for zoology and senior assistant to Abert Uhlig at the university . He also received a research assignment, in the context of which he wrote his dissertation Anopheles and Malaria in Thuringia in 1960 . After his oral examination in zoology, botany and pedagogy , the university's mathematics and natural science faculty earned him a doctorate in natural sciences .

In 1959 Baer was appointed lecturer for biology methodology at the University of Rostock . In 1964 the university habilitated him on the basis of the text Experimental Biology Lessons for Dr. sc. paed. Since 1965 he worked at the university as a professor with a teaching position, four years later he was promoted to full professor. In between he had headed the university's educational institute from 1964 to 1967. In 1967/1968 he headed the Institute for Mathematical and Scientific Methodology and for the following four years the Section for Biology. He was also a member of the university senate .

In 1982 and 1985 Baer was also visiting professor for four weeks at the University of Riga . After several long, serious illnesses, doctors advised him to retire , so he retired in 1988 . Nevertheless, between 1992 and 1995 he was visiting professor three times for two weeks at the University of Salzburg . Baer also taught at other universities, sometimes in other countries, as a visiting lecturer or professor. He died on May 3, 2009 in Rostock.

In 1969 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the University of Rostock .

Work / teaching

Baer taught the didactics of studies for aspiring biology teachers. He focused on the problems of health and sex education, the educational content of biology, the coordination of scientific subjects and the development of a curriculum. He conducted research in the field of medical entomology and human biology, he dealt with various working and experimental techniques in biology.

According to his own statement, Baer published over 100 works on education and science. Among them are 14 books for which he was (co-) author or editor, these had a total of over 40 editions. During his career, he had supervised a total of over 30 doctoral students and prepared numerous reports as part of this.

In addition, Baer was a member of several scientific commissions for several years. He himself emphasizes his membership of UNESCO and the Berlin Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR . He worked on the editorial team of the scientific journal of the Rostock University and on the editorial staff of the journal Biologie im Schule .
