An intake manifold or intake manifold , intake manifold , Ansaugspinne is in an internal combustion engine , the connecting portion between the engine block and the carburetor or fuel injection system . It is a cast iron part , now often made of aluminum or plastic , which is screwed to the engine on one side and to the carburetor on the other. Starting from the carburettor, the fresh gas enters the combustion chamber through the intake port and the inlet valves . Occasionally, intake manifolds made from heat-resistant plastics are also used.

Depending on the size of the intake port bore, the engine output can be increased or decreased. So z. B. factory "strong" motorcycles with the help of smaller dimensioned intake manifolds throttled to a lower performance, in order to be classified in a lower insurance category.

An electrically heated intake manifold preheater (also known as a Heizigel ) is used in gasoline engines . During the cold start phase, it is used to heat the sucked-in fuel-air mixture in order to achieve better cold-running properties and to enable faster regulation of the exhaust gases .
