Christian Schmidt (born July 31, 1971 in Bergisch Gladbach ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper .
Career
After his youth with the clubs Sportfreunde Hörn, Police SV Aachen and Alemannia Aachen , he played in the amateur area at Westwacht Aachen and Borussia Brand until 1995 . For the 1995/96 season he moved to the Regionalliga West / Southwest back to Alemannia Aachen.
There he was initially a substitute goalkeeper for two seasons (1995/96 behind Karsten Härtel , 1996/97 behind Karl-Heinz Kieren). After Kieren switched to LR Ahlen , Schmidt became a regular goalkeeper. Schmidt offered an outstanding performance in the cup game against 1. FC Nürnberg on August 15, 1997, when he secured victory against the first division side with two saved shots on penalties. From the 21st match day 1997/98 André Lenz was set as goalkeeper. In the first Regionalliga game of the 1998/99 season Lenz was also in goal. After 24 minutes, he was sent off. Schmidt then stayed in goal, even after Lenz's suspension had expired, until he tore a meniscus during training in October 1998. As a result, Christian Schmidt moved back into the second tier. The 1998/99 season ended with Alemannia's promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga . Promotion coach Werner Fuchs died on May 11, 1999, three game days before the end of the season. André Winkhold completed his work .
After the promotion, Schmidt was still only a substitute keeper. After Lenz broke his finger in May 2000, Schmidt still played five games in the 1999/2000 season, which ended in eighth place. In 2000/01 it was used once. After André Lenz moved to FC Energie Cottbus , Aachen signed Stephan Straub in 2001 , like Schmidt born in 1971. During the preparation for the season Schmidt was chosen as the goalkeeper and stayed there until the 15th matchday. After a bruise and ligament stretching that Schmidt suffered while warming up before the game against Unterhaching (16th matchday), Straub guarded the goal for the last three game days until the winter break. Schmidt injured himself again in the winter training camp in Spain, which decided the open goalkeeper question. Straub played a good second half, Schmidt's professional contract was not extended at the end of the season. Because of a medical degree, he decided not to move to another city. In 2002/03 he played for the amateurs of Alemannia and was goalkeeping coach for the professionals. Several times he also helped out as a substitute goalkeeper in the second division. He later also became a team doctor. His contract was terminated in winter 2010/2011.
