Karsten Härtel (born April 4, 1961 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played from 1987 to 1989 for Halleschen FC Chemie . Härtel is 15 times GDR junior national player.

Athletic career

Karsten Härtel began his football career with the tractor company sports association (BSG) in the Prignitz community of Berge . In 1975 he joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Between 1977 and 1979 he was a member of the GDR junior national team, for which he was in goal in 15 international matches. From 1978 to 1983 the 1.84 m tall Härtel was the goalkeeper of the junior league team of FC Carl Zeiss. Although he had been nominated as the second goalkeeper of the league team for the seasons 1981/82 and 1983/84 to 1986/87, he did not play a single league game for Jena. He had no chance against the national goalkeepers Hans-Ulrich Grapenthin and Perry Bräutigam .

When the junior league was dissolved in 1983 and their teams were classified as the 2nd teams of their clubs in the respective district leagues , Härtel played with FC Carl Zeiss Jena II in 1983/84, initially in the third-class district league Gera, but rose to the GDR after just one season -Liga on. There, too, he was in competition with Perry Bräutigam and only had a narrow lead with 16:14 appearances. In 1985/86 Härtel had to share the Jenaer Tor with Ralf Schumann, who was four years his junior, and was only used 15 times in the 34 league games. After only four appearances in the first half of the 1986/87 season, Härtel moved to league rivals Hallescher FC Chemie.

In Halle Härtel had to replace the goalkeepers Jens Adler and Michael Walther who were not ready for action and initially played eleven point games. At the end of the season, the HFC was established as a climber in the league. In the league season 1987/88 Härtel was undisputed number one in the Halle goal, he was used in all 26 point games. Also for the season 1988/89 he was planned as goalkeeper number one, but could only be used in five league games at the end of the season. Although he was also nominated as the first goalkeeper for 1989/90, Härtel was not used in the major league at all.

After the political change of 1989/90 , Härtel used the new opportunity to settle in West Germany. First he joined the national league club VfL Rheinbach in 1990/91 . Then he also played a season (1991/92) with league rivals SC Brück . In the seasons 1992/93 to 1995/96 Härtel was goalkeeper for the third-class regional division Alemannia Aachen . Härtel ended his career as a competitive footballer in 1996/97 with the regional league team Bonner SC .
