attack

At around 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, an explosive device was thrown at the Sikh community center in Essen. Three people were injured by the detonation . Two men were treated with minor injuries and the priest was seriously injured. More than 100 members of the party were still in the building at the time of the attack, most of them in other rooms and the rest of the participants in a nearby ballroom. Perpetrator

The police investigation commission was increased to more than 20 employees. The police described the attack as an " act of terrorism ".

From April 20, 2016, the investigation focused on two young people from the Salafist scene in North Rhine-Westphalia . The main suspect Yussuf T. from Gelsenkirchen turned himself in to the police late in the evening of April 20. He gave the name of his alleged accomplice. A special task force arrested the second suspect youth Mohammed B. on April 21, 2016 in his parents' home in Essen.

When evaluating the data, the police are said to have found evidence that Yusuf T. sympathized with the " Islamic State ". He is said to have had close ties to the Islamist Lohberger Brigade from Dinslaken . He is said to have organized distributions of the Koran at the stands of the Koran distribution campaign in Germany (“Read!”) .

A third youth was briefly taken into custody. The investigators assume that the young people did not plan the act alone.

Both people were known to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in North Rhine-Westphalia and had been noticed as extremists in the past .

The Essen Regional Court sentenced the two bombers in March 2017 for attempted murder and grievous bodily harm to youth imprisonment of seven years and six years and nine months and their accomplices for appointment to the murder to a youth prison sentence of six years. The defense announced revision appeal.

aftermath

Despite the attack, the community held on to its long-planned Nagar Kirtan procession through downtown Essen on April 23, 2016. However, in close consultation with the Sikh community, the police and the city, the decision to change the destination of the procession was made.

Around a thousand participants took part in the procession. The holy scriptures of the Sikhs Guru Granth Sahib were carried with them during the procession .

reviews

The daily criticized the fact that the attention of the German public was very limited after the attack. “The attack in Essen shows one thing: there is growing Islamist terror in Germany, which is also expressed through acts at home. He doesn't always have big goals in his sights like the Bundestag , a central station or a German shopping street. The Islamist terrorist can even against minorities judge. There are 13,000 Sikhs in Germany. You are part of society and do not expose yourself to radical views. "
