Richard Wachsmuth (born January 26, 1840 in Naumburg (Saale) , † October 31, 1908 in Hanover ) was a German classical philologist , teacher and first director of the Hanoverian Kaiser Wilhelm-Gymnasium .

Life

Richard Wachsmuth was the son of the lawyer Julius Wachsmuth (1803–1877), who worked in Naumburg on the Saale, and the brother of the philologist Curt Wachsmuth (1837–1905). So he became the brother-in-law of Marie Luise Henriette , née Ritschl (1842–1903) and uncle of the experimental physicist Richard Wachsmuth (1868–1941).

Career

Richard Wachsmuth attended the Domgymnasium Naumburg and from 1853 to 1858 the Pforta State School . He then studied at the University of Heidelberg , at the one in Jena , at the University of Bonn and in Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1863 and then passed his state examination in Bonn. During his studies in 1861 he became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity .

From 1863 to 1874 Richard Wachsmuth worked for more than a decade as a teacher at a grammar school in Posen , and had already accepted a position as senior teacher at a grammar school in Emden in 1873 , where he worked until 1875. Also in 1875, Wachsmuth married Theda Frerichs , the daughter of a medical council in Aurich . In the same year, 1875, Richard Wachsmuth was appointed director of the newly built Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hanover.

After a stroke in 1907, Wachsmuth retired in 1908 . He died that same year. His grave can be found today in the Stöcken city cemetery on the banks of the local pond in section A 17 , grave number 36 . The tomb there is a fragment of a temple in which a grieving youth expresses the torch of life.
