attack

The attacker drove his car down the Champs-Élysées at noon on June 19, 2017 and rammed a gendarmerie minibus . His car then detonated and went up in flames. The attacker died on the spot in his car. No one else was injured.

The attacker's car was loaded with several gas cylinders and explosives. An AK74 assault rifle and several handguns were also in the car.

Perpetrator

The perpetrator (born 1986) had no criminal record. Since 2015 he has been in a threat file ( Fiche S , S for Sûreté de l'État , German  “State Security” ) for allegedly radicalized Islamists. During the year he traveled to Turkey several times. Many jihadists use the country with the border with Syria for transit .

The attacker was a marksman and had a gun license. When his house in Plessis-Pâté near Paris was later searched , an arsenal was found. According to the investigators, the man had nine weapons that had been reported to the authorities: two pistols and a rifle, for which he needed a permit, as well as six other weapons that he only had to report to the authorities. It is unclear how many he actually owned.

At the end of 2016, the perpetrator had applied for an extension of his gun license. The police then asked the Domestic Intelligence Service (DST) for an assessment. He came to the conclusion that it was not justified to withdraw the permit.

Investigations

Shortly after the crime, four relatives of the attacker were arrested.
