Anselmo Duarte

Anselmo Duarte Bento (born April 21, 1920 in Salto , São Paulo , † November 7, 2009 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian actor , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Anselmo Duarte is considered to be the pioneer of the new Brazilian cinema Cinema Novo of the late 1950s and 1960s. His works have received several awards, for example he won the Palme d'Or for “ Fifty Steps to Justice ” ( O Pagador de Promessas ) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962 . This film was also nominated for an Oscar . His film " The possessed of Catulé " ( Vereda de Salvação ) was shown in the competition at the 1965 Berlinale .

Anselmo Duarte died at the age of 89 after suffering a stroke in a hospital in São Paulo.
