Ansgar Thiel

Ansgar Thiel (born 1963 in Laupheim ) is a German sports scientist . He is a professor at the Institute for Sports Science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He has been the director of the institute since 2010.

Education and career

Ansgar Thiel studied sports science, psychology and psychogerontology at the universities of Tübingen and Erlangen-Nuremberg. He received his doctorate and habilitation from Bielefeld University . After a substitute chair he was professor for sports sociology at the Technical University of Chemnitz . Since 2004 he has held a professorship for social and health sciences at the Institute for Sports Science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. For his scientific work he received a. a. the dissertation award and the habilitation award from the Westphalian-Lippian University Society.

Research areas

Ansgar Thiel's research focuses on social and health science issues relating to sport, health and the body. He was u. a. Head of interdisciplinary studies on top-level sport (e.g. GOAL Study), on the social conditions and effects of physical activity, on individual biopsychosocial adaptation to physical training (iReAct Study), on sport and activity in old age as well as on age- and weight-related stereotyping. Ansgar Thiel has also published various works on the sociology of conflict.
