The Neumelans residence (also called "Neumelans Castle") is a building from the late 16th century on the southwestern exit of Sand in Taufers in the northeast of South Tyrol .

History / description

The strong castle-like building, which is counted among the most beautiful residences in the country, was built by Hans Fieger from Melans, who acted as the care judge at Taufers Castle , within 12 months in the years 1582/83. The name of the residence comes from the residence Melans near Absam in the Inn Valley, which was also built by the Fieger family. According to the Fiegern, the building belonged to the Zeiller v. Zeillheim (from 1708), that of Ottenthal (from 1815), who restored the building in 1864, and since 1956 through the inheritance of the Schober family.

The massive four-storey, well-formed building with (almost) regular window arrangement has turrets at all 4 corners (square below, round in the roof region) and a high, slate-covered, crooked hip roof. The rooms (with panels and field ceilings) are arranged around large hallways, these are vaulted on the ground floor and flat on the upper floors.

The historian Emil von Ottenthal comes from Neumelans and grew up here.
