Betts graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1897 and Columbia University with a master's degree in 1898.

It is known for the Betts method for the electrolytic cleaning of lead and is used for the production of particularly pure lead (e.g. bismuth admixtures). From 1901 he held several patents for it. In 1905 he developed a process for the electrolytic production of zinc.

In 1925 he acquired a manganese mine near Plainfield, Massachusetts , which his son continued.
