António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro
António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro , Barão (Baron) de Regaleira, (born November 27, 1848 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , † October 24, 1920 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was a Portuguese entrepreneur, eccentric , art collector and Freemason .
It was one of the "coffee barons" in Brazil. He became world-famous for his seat, the Quinta da Regaleira Castle in Sintra , which he designed himself and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site . He was one of the richest people who have ever lived in Portugal and was already entitled "Monteiro, o millionario" (Monteiro the millionaire).
Live and act
He came from a family who had emigrated to Brazil and made their fortune there in coffee growing, gemstone mining and trading. The family gained considerable wealth with it. Monteiro studied law at the University of Coimbra and finished his studies in 1871. After the death of his father, he inherited the title of Baron da Regaleira.
He spent his life running the company in Brazil, where he lived between 1871 and 1879 and then finally returned to Portugal.In 1892 he commissioned the Italian architect Luigi Manini to build the property that he had previously acquired from the state in Sintra. A property with the castle, a chapel, temples, a huge fountain and a very large park was built by 1910. The property was among the largest in Portugal and was only surpassed by the king's palaces.
The eccentric man, who was also a Freemason , had the interior furnishings covered with clear Masonic symbols. He was an art collector of invaluable books and paintings, he also collected insects and owned a huge herbarium . He was the only one in the world who owned a watch made especially for him, which was considered to be the most complicated in the history of watchmaking. Monteiro loved literature, science and especially music, especially Richard Wagner's .
António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro died in 1920 at the age of 71 and was buried in the celebrity cemetery Cemitério dos Prazeres . He received a monumental tomb, also created by Luigi Maninni.
