Cemitério dos Prazeres
The Cemitério dos Prazeres is an urban cemetery in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It is located in the western parish (" freguesia ") of Estrela . Opposite its main entrance is the “Prazeres” terminus of line 28 of the Lisbon tram .
history
The Cemitério dos Prazeres was built as a public cemetery in 1833, following a cholera epidemic in June of that year. It claimed thousands of deaths and, for medical and hygienic reasons, forced the authorities to no longer allow popular funerals next to the mostly centrally located religious institutions. A corresponding law passed in 1835 led to the establishment of public cemeteries across the country.
The name often gives rise to discussion: "Cemitério dos Prazeres" means "cemetery of joys". The name probably goes back to a property of the same name at this point, which served as an excursion park in the decades before the cemetery was built.
Characteristics
Located in the west of the city, with its more aristocratic and upper-class quarters, the tombs reflect both the taste and the material possibilities of the citizens, especially of the 19th century. Symbols of different faiths, professions and origins can be found here, on the graves of Freemasons , deserved public servants and well-known critics, alongside those of ordinary citizens. A number of important writers are buried here.
The tombs or mainly above-ground tombs with freely set up coffins ("burial villas") are arranged like houses in a city, correspondingly about 80 streets and avenues run through the cemetery like a chessboard - there are also areas with burial .
The family grave of Pedro de Sousa Holstein is considered the largest family grave in Europe. Inspired by the design of the Temple of Solomon and the Egyptian pyramids , around 200 family members are buried there.
Before being transferred to the national pantheon in the Igreja de Santa Engrácia , the fado singer and actress Amália Rodrigues and the writer Aquilino Ribeiro had a grave there. The writer Fernando Pessoa was also buried here until he was transferred to the Jeronimos Monastery in 1985 .
