The well-known Franciscan was also active as a performer in many of his plays. Live and act

Ribeiro came from a simple background. Before preparing for his ordination he led a dissolute and unsteady life and lived in a "wild marriage" with Catarina Dias. Because of his numerous affairs with women, he was considered a womanizer in the city. As he got older, however, he changed his mind and joined the Franciscan order in his hometown, moved to Lisbon and has led an exemplary life ever since. His work was also created during this time. Despite some satirical influences, the order allowed the writing of secular and satirical works as well as appearances as an actor in its plays. A piece was before King John III. listed.

Ribeiro Chiado's work consists mainly of theater pieces that can be described as comical-satirical and in which he targeted human weaknesses. The talented author and voice imitator often imitated well-known personalities of his time, which is said to have led to great laughter. His works, which were also understood by ordinary people, were very popular with the people. In his poetry he was able to pursue the question of platonic love, which he often glorified as a divine ideal.

The Lisbon district of Chiado is named after Antonio Ribeiro Chiado, among other things because he worked there and his monastery stood there in what is now Rua Almeida Garrett. There is also a bronze statue of the poet erected by the city council in 1925 and made by the well-known sculptor António Augusto da Costa Mota (1862–1930).
