António Teixeira (born May 14, 1707 in Lisbon , † after 1776 ) was a Portuguese composer and harpsichordist.

Life

António Teixeira spent twelve years of study in Rome from 1717 thanks to a grant from King John V. During this time he made musical studies with Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni

On June 11, 1728 Teixeira was appointed Kapellmeister at the Lisbon Cathedral.

The music biographer José Mazza confirmed that Teixeira composed seven operas. These were in the form of singing games with partly spoken texts, they were created between 1733 and 1739 and were performed in the theater of the Bairro Alto (upper town) of Lisbon. Teixeira wrote the first comic opera by a Portuguese composer. He composed numerous festive cantatas for the local aristocracy.

Most of Teixeira's sacred music is in the archives of the Lisbon Cathedral. His best-known work today is a 20-part Te Deum from 1734.
