Anthony Goicolea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony Goicolea (* 1971 in Atlanta ) is a Cuban-American photographer . He lives and works in New York City .

life and work

Goicolea studied in Madrid (1989), Georgia (1989–1994) and at the Pratt Institute in New York (1994–1996). He then became a photographer, draftsman, video and installation artist, who mainly staged and made narcissistic self-portraits of himself. In these portraits he created humorous as well as terrifying scenarios in which he often played out events from childhood and adolescence .

Goicolea's interaction scenes of digital clones are constructed in a cinematographic-graphic style that copies current trends from fashion, advertising and music videos. This pop culture aesthetic is a deliberate strategy to place his work in the context of widespread advertising imagery and thus in the mainstream . This is how cross-over projects emerge such as with the designer Thom Browne with the film "The Septemberists", who used a version of the Goicolea film "The Septemberistst" in 2006 to announce his new collection.

The connection to science fiction and horror films can also be found in Goicolea's photographic landscape scenarios. His black-and-white "Almost Safe Series" shows places under a sky that is covered with dark, heavy clouds of smoke and thunderstorms. The depopulated landscapes with their industrial ruins and features of advanced environmental destruction cause a threatening doomsday mood.
