Bernd U. Schipper

Bernd Ulrich Schipper (born June 10, 1968 in Darmstadt ) is a German theologian and Egyptologist . Schipper is Professor of the Old Testament at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He is related to the English scholar Jakob Schipper (1842–1915) and the actor and director Sebastian Schipper (* 1968).

Life

After attending school in Darmstadt, Schipper left his hometown with the Abitur in 1987 and began studying Protestant theology and Jewish studies at the University of Mainz (among others with Otto Böcher ), later at the University of Bonn (among others with Werner H. Schmidt and Gerhard Sauter ) , which he completed in 1995 with the first theological exam. As early as 1992, he completed a further course of study in Egyptology at the University of Bonn, which he completed with a Magister Artium (Egyptology). This is followed by a doctoral fellowship ( "Intercultural religious or religious-historical studies" in the graduate program) which concluded in Bonn, the 1999 promotion to Dr. theol. in Protestant Theology (Old Testament) followed.

Until 2002, Schipper was a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 534 »Judaism-Christianity. Constitution and Differentiation in Antiquity and the Present ”at the University of Bonn. During this time he also completed his vicariate and school service (in Bonn-Bad Godesberg) and in 2001 passed the second theological exam at the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland.

In 2002 Schipper was appointed to the Hanseatic city as one of the first junior professors at the University of Bremen . Until 2008 he taught the subject »Literatures of Religions, Biblical Studies«. During his time in Bremen, Schipper received his doctorate a second time: in 2004 he was awarded the title of Dr. phil. in Egyptology in the 'Cultural History and Cultural Studies' department of the University of Hamburg . In addition, in the 2007 summer semester Schipper was a substitute professor for religious studies and religious history at the University of Heidelberg (Philosophical Faculty, Chair Prof. Dr. Gregor Ahn ). Linked to this was his collaboration in the SFB 619 "Ritual Dynamics".

After a successful tenure-track process , Schipper was appointed Professor of Biblical Studies and the History of Religions at the University of Bremen on April 1, 2008. During his time at the University of Bremen, Schipper was nominated twice for the “ Prize for Excellent Teaching and Innovation ”. He was also the managing director of the Institute for Religious Studies and Religious Education.

A few months before the start of an already long planned research stay as a visiting scientist ( Visiting Scholar ) at the Harvard University in the United States for the period from 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010 received Schipper the reputation as a professor of Old Testament at the Institute of Protestant Theology of the University of Oldenburg . While he was still in the USA, Schipper was offered a position at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which meant that he was employed at the University of Oldenburg for a year, but never worked.

Since April 1, 2010, Schipper has been teaching the subject "Old Testament" with a focus on "History of Israel in the ancient oriental world" at the theological faculty of Berlin's Humboldt University. From August 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014, Schipper returned to Harvard University as a visiting professor, where he taught at the Divinity School and at the Department of Near Eastern Literature and Civilizations (Faculty of Arts and Sciences).

Schipper is considered an international expert in the field of the history of Israel, the ancient oriental and ancient religious history as well as the literature of ancient Egypt and ancient Israel. Schipper is also active as a book author in these areas. Since 2009 he has also been co-editor of the specialist journal Welt des Orients . Schipper has been a board member of the Scientific Society for Theology since 2011 ; In 2012 he was ordained as a pastor in an honorary position in the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .
