Anthony Johnson (diplomat)

Anthony Smith Rowe Johnson (* 1938 ) is a Jamaican economist, diplomat and politician with the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). He has been the Jamaican High Commissioner in the United Kingdom since 2010 .

Life

Johnson attended Petersfield Elementary School and Kingston College . He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1964 and a master's degree in international trade and finance in 1965 . He then worked as a journalist for the Jamaica Gleaner and then as a reporter for the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation . From 1992 to 2008 he was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management Studies at the University of the West Indies .

He is married and has four children.

politics

Johnson was a Senator from 1980 to 1983, when he was Secretary of State in the Department of Industry and Commerce. In the 1983 election boycotted by the PNP , he was elected to the House of Representatives in the constituency of North East St. Catherine and became Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture. In the 1989 election, lost by the JLP, he won his constituency a second time. He was then appointed senator for the opposition for two further legislative terms between 1993 and 2007, and from 2002 he was opposition leader in the Senate. Between 1989 and 2007 he was at times opposition spokesman for education, agriculture, and mining, energy and technology. He was also temporarily deputy party chairman of the JLP.

From 1991 to 1995 he was a member of the Electoral Advisory Committee.

From March 2008 to May 2010 Johnson was Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States and Jamaica’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States . From May 2010 to February 2012 he was Jamaica's High Commissioner in the United Kingdom and, based in London, he also served as Jamaican Ambassador to Ireland , Finland , Norway , Sweden and Denmark .
