Anthony Joseph Drexel

Anthony Joseph Drexel (born September 13, 1826 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , died June 30, 1893 in Karlsbad , Bohemia ) was an American banker and philanthropist who had a significant influence on the emergence and development of modern banking and investment strategies.
Life
Anthony Joseph Drexel was the son of Franz Martin Drexel (1792–1863) and Catherine Hookey (1795–1870). He had five siblings:
- Mary Johanna (1822–1873),
- Francis Anthony (June 20, 1824– February 15, 1885, father of St. Katharine Maria Drexel ),
- Joseph William (January 24, 1833–1888), representative of his father's company in Germany , since 1867 partner in the banking house D., Harjes & Company in Paris, co-founder of Garfield National Bank and director of ten other US American banks, President of the Philharmonic Society in New York and Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art .
- Heloise (1837–1895),
- Caroline "Carrie" (1838-1911),
He had a strict upbringing and started working in his father's bank at the age of 13. In 1847 he became a partner. In 1867 he founded a bank in Paris , Drexel, Harjes & Co., together with John H. Harjes and Eugene Winthrop. Drexel was also instrumental in founding Drexel, Morgan & Co (later JPMorgan Chase ) in New York in 1871. Drexel founded Drexel University in 1891 . He was also the first president of the Fairmount Park Art Association (now the Association for Public Art ). In 1892 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
He died of a heart attack in Carlsbad at the age of 66 and was buried in The Woodlands Cemetery , Philadelphia.

Drexel was married to Ellen B. Rozet (1832-1891) and the marriage had nine children: Emily (1850-1883), Frances Katherine (1852-1892), Marie (1854-1855), Mae E. (1857-1886) , Sarah Sallie (1860–1929), Francis Anthony II (1861–1869), John (1863–1935), Anthony Joseph Jr. (1865–1934), George William (1868–1944).
