Antoine-Marie Héron de Villefosse (born June 21, 1774 in Paris , † June 6, 1852 in Caen ) was a French mining engineer and author.

Life

Villefosse finished his studies in 1801 with a degree as Ingénieur des mines and was appointed commissioner for the Harz in 1803 during the Napoleonic occupation . Napoleon Bonaparte appointed him inspector general of the mines between the Rhine and the Vistula in 1807. In 1808 Villefosse issued a map of mines and smelters for the Harz. Villefosse made Clausthal his seat in 1809 and, together with Julius Albert, wrote the description of the mineral wealth of the Harz mined . In addition, he was the editor of several maps of the area between the Rhine, Elbe and Ore Mountains.

After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Villefosse returned to Paris and was given by Louis XVIII. Appointed Cabinet Secretary and Inspector General, 1st Class. In 1834 he retired as the Conseil des mines and spent the rest of his life in Normandy.

His main work is the three-volume de la Richesse minérale published between 1810 and 1819 with the accompanying Atlas de la Richesse Minérale .

In 1804 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , in 1816 a member of the Académie des Sciences and in 1823 of the Leopoldina .
