Antoine Baud (born September 16, 1805 in Chêne-Thônex , † May 7, 1867 in Bern ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic priest. During his tenure in Bern he rebuilt the parish and managed to build the first Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul (Bern) .

Live and act

Antoine Baud was born as the son of Joseph Baud and Jeannette Baud. Dunoyer was born in Chêne-Thônex, (today Chêne-Bourg and Thônex ). He attended the grammar school and seminary in the college of St. Michael in Freiburg . In 1830 he was ordained a priest in Freiburg by Bishop Tobias Jenni and received his first position as vicar in Geneva. From 1831 to 1832 he was vicar under Pastor Christoph Anton Tschann and then, as his successor, pastor in Bern until 1867. With donated funds, he was able to buy a house on Metzgergasse (today Rathausgasse ) in Bern, where a parsonage and the newly founded Catholic school were set up. In years of domestic and foreign collecting activities, he raised a capital of around 600,000 francs and made it possible to build his own church near Bern's town hall. From 1842, Baud was also responsible for the newly created community in Interlaken . His striving for recognition of the Catholic denomination in the canton of Bern was granted a temporary success with the building of the church in Bern.

Attacks on Catholic confession prompted Baud to publish an apologetic study on the Sacrament of the Sacrament in 1854: L'Orthodoxie de la confession sacramentelle , in German: The Orthodoxy of Sacramental Confession .

The great burden as a pastor of a growing congregation, in the constant fight against political resistance and the concern about the constantly increasing construction costs for the church, led to a heart disease which increased over several years, from which he died on May 7, 1867. A few days earlier he was able to attend the primacy of a young priest whom he himself had baptized and seen growing up in his community. He was buried in a crypt in the crypt of his church with great sympathy. A painting in the Church of St. Peter and Paul by Johann Friedrich Dietler shows him in the robes of the Protonotary in 1866, a few months before his death.
