Antoine Champion

Antoine Champion (* 1425 ; † June 29, 1495 in Turin ) was Bishop of Mondovì from 1484 to 1490 and then Bishop of Geneva until his death .

Antoine came from a noble family from the Maurienne . His parents were Guillaume and Pernette de Prez. He was a doctor of civil law and was Grand Chancellor of the Duchy of Savoy from 1483 until his death . After his wife died, he received minor orders and in 1484 was appointed Bishop of Mondovì . When in 1490 Pope Innocent VIII refused to confirm Charles de Seyssel , who was elected by the Geneva Cathedral Chapter , Antoine Champion was transferred to Geneva.

Even in his day, Reformation ideas developed in the Geneva Church: Antoine Champion, Bishop of Geneva, stated in front of the clergy on May 7, 1493, years before Luther and Zwingli, which also became important demands of the Reformers:

«People dedicated to the service of God must be distinguished by a pure life; but now our priests have surrendered to all vices and lead a wicked life than the rest of the flock.
