Antoine Maurin (General)

Antoine Maurin (born December 19, 1771 in Montpellier , † October 4, 1830 in Paris ) was a French Général de division .

Life

In 1792 Maurin joined the army and fought in the cavalry during the revolution . He was a supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte and took part in some battles of the First Coalition War. As he was distinguished by bravery, he was quickly promoted to officer.

During the war in Portugal , Maurin led a cavalry brigade under General Andoche Junot . He then acted as military governor of the Algarve province in southern Portugal. When the Portuguese rebelled against the French occupation with the support of British troops, General Junot and his troops had to withdraw. Governor Maurin was caught sick in Faro and captured on June 16, 1808 along with 70 soldiers.

They came on a British warship and remained in captivity until September 1812. After his return home and a short recovery period, he was given another command. Already on 26./27. August the following year he commanded the battle for Dresden . In the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , he commanded the 9th Light Cavalry Brigade.

After Napoleon's abdication, Maurin served under King Louis XVIII. ; during the reign of the Hundred Days he returned under Napoleon's command.

Maurin was seriously injured in the Battle of Ligny , but recovered and was able to perform various military tasks and offices until 1823. That year he retired into private life. During the July Revolution , Maurin enlisted again for the army, but died on October 4, 1830.
