Antoine de la Baume Pluvinel (* 1555 ; † 1620 ) was the riding instructor of Louis XIII.

Pluvinel's method

Pluvinel was one of the most important exponents of the non-violent teaching method in riding. Although he was a student of Giovanni Pignatelli (Neapolitan Riding School), who worked with extremely sharp curbs , and in his day the Italian school in the art of riding with its method of violence (see Salomon de la Broue ) was the dominant force, Pluvinel believed that the horse through an understanding of his character, praise and patience, he could be made to cooperate without violence. This non-violent method should contribute to the horse's performance and extend its life. This attitude is clearly shown in the following two quotes from his book Le Manège Royal (published posthumously in 1623):

"The horse must enjoy the riding arena itself, otherwise the rider will not succeed in anything with grace."

"We should be concerned not to annoy the horse and to preserve its natural grace, it is like the flower scent of the fruit, which never returns once it has evaporated."

Pluvinel was of the opinion that all riding figures were only an elaboration of the horse's natural movements, which should be made more expressive by the riding. He was very concerned with training the horse by hand and invented the pillars as an aid .
