Antoine Philippe De Schryver (born March 27, 1924 in Lochristi ; † March 9, 2005 ) was a Belgian art historian and professor at the University of Ghent, where he taught the history of illumination. He specialized in the field of illustrated manuscripts from the southern Netherlands, painting of the 15th century and the artists at the Burgundian court.

Education and career

Antoine De Schryver was born on March 27, 1924 in Lochristi. He studied art history and archeology at Ghent University and graduated in 1950. From 1951 he worked as a research assistant at the Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium - Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique . Between 1953 and 1955 he was a candidate for the National Fund for Scientific Research and received his doctorate in art history and archeology in 1957. In the same year he was also appointed curator of the Archaeological Museum in Ghent. He held this position until 1971.

In the 1950s, De Schryver received a number of travel grants, including the National Trust Princess Marie-José (1951), the Belgian-Dutch cultural agreement (1951) and a number of the Commission mixte des échanges culturels franco-belges scholarships (1952, 1953, 1956). In 1960 De Schryver followed the late Frédéric Lyna as a lecturer in the history of book painting at the University of Ghent. In addition, he succeeded the late Herman Bouchery as director of the National Center of the History and Archeology of Books that same year. In 1965 he became a member of the Académie royale d'Archéologie de Belgique . At this academy he was general secretary from 1975 to 1977, deputy secretary from 1979 to 1981 and chairman from 1981 to 1983. In 1984 he became a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and Art.

As an art historian, De Schryver had a wide range of interests and published mainly on illustrated manuscripts from the southern Netherlands, paintings from the 15th century and artists at the Burgundian court. In the early 1950s, he wrote two publications on the Ghent Altarpiece with Roger Marijnisse and Paul B. Coremans . In 1957 he defended his doctoral thesis on miniaturists at the court of Charles the Bold . In addition, De Schryver published a study of the Book of Hours of Mary of Burgundy , which he could ascribe to Lieven van Lathem and the Gentic calligrapher Nicolas Spierinc . The same team worked on the prayer book of Charles the Bold, acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1989 . After his retirement, De Schryver was commissioned by the museum to write a monograph on this manuscript. The final version of the text was finalized in 2004, but was not published until after De Schryver's death on March 9, 2005.

De Schryver's archive is kept by the Illuminare - Center for the Study of Medieval Art (KU Leuven) , a university-run research and documentation center. In 2005 Illuminare succeeded with the support of Dr. Dominique Vanwijnsberghe to acquire his archive. De Schryver left about 75 meters of text, including books, magazines, various documentaries, slides and pictures. In 2006 his library was divided among the libraries of the KU Leuven. However, his documentation, along with his slides and images, remained entirely in Illuminare.
